Hyper-Grid vs. Precision Geofencing

Hyper-Grid Geofencing

  • Location Targeting. Select 0.5-mile x 0.5-mile bounding boxes on a hyper-grid (based on 2-decimal latitude and longitude lines).

  • Digital Conversions. Track digital conversions such as visits to your website's landing page(s) and/or website button click(s).

  • Demographic Targeting. Allows for additional demographic targeting layers to be added. NOTE: This will result in a higher CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) and can limit budget spend if your audience is too narrow.
  • Recency Limit. Users are served ads for up to 30 days after entering a targeted hyper-grid.

  • Available Media: OTT/CTV, video pre-roll, digital audio, and display ads. (Digital out-of-home is currently in development.)

  • Location Restrictions: Hyper-Grid Geofencing is compliant with all US states; it can also be used in Canada, Mexico, Australia, Puerto Rico, and Brazil. While you can try to geofence in countries outside of the US and Canada, campaign underspending is to be expected.

Precision Geofencing

  • Location Targeting. Drawn, polygonal geofences around specific locations with accuracy averaging within 4.9 meters (16 feet). Addressable geofencing uses this same location technology, but automatically geofences the address's property lines based on a provided address list.

  • Demographic Targeting. No additional demographic targeting is available.

  • Available Media: OTT/CTV, video pre-roll, digital audio, and display ads.

  • Location Restrictions: Some US states have restricted the use of precision geofencing. Be sure to check your current state laws. As of October 2026, this affects Oregon, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
    • Drawn precision geofencing is also available in Canada, Mexico, Australia, Puerto Rico, and Brazil. While you can try to geofence in countries outside of the US and Canada, campaign underspending is to be expected.
    • Addressable geofencing is only available in non-restricted US states.

Target Types

Review the differences between Addressable, Drawn Geofencing, and Event Geofencing.

Precision Only

Addressable
  • Upload a list of addresses (in .csv file format)
  • The system will automatically geofence property lines
  • Must upload a minimum of 50 addresses
  • One-million maximum addresses per campaign
  • Great for large target address lists. Best suited for residential use. Great to use for campaigns where you want to target a list of users long term. You can update the target address list at any time.

Precision + Hyper-Grid

Drawn
  • Precision: Drawn, polygonal geofences
  • Hyper-Grid: 0.5-mile x 0.5-mile bounding box selections + demographic targeting options
  • Searchable Google integrated map
  • Precision Geofencing is great for targeting hyper-specific locations. Hyper-Grid is great for targeting broader hyper-specific areas on the map with demographic targeting options. Best suited for longer-term campaigns.

Precision + Hyper-Grid

Event
  • Precision: Drawn, polygonal geofences
  • Hyper-Grid: 0.5-mile x 0.5-mile bounding box selections + demographic targeting options
  • Only collects user-devices of people at a specific event
  • Serves ads to users during the event and for up to 30 days after the event
  • Great for in-person events where you want to target event goers during and after the event.

Tips for Picking Your Campaign Type and Targeting

  • Review the differences between precision and Hyper-Grid Geofencing outlined above to determine which one makes the most sense for your campaign goals. Understanding how each works is very helpful.

  • If you are in a state that legally limits precision geofence targeting options, use Hyper-Grid Geofencing. Limited states currently include New Jersey, Virginia, Oregon, and Maryland (October, 2026). It's a good idea to check the most current laws in your state. Rest assured, Qujam uses automated system guardrails, third party compliance, and quality assurance partners to review all campaigns in an effort to help protect our users.

  • Only use addressable geofencing if you want to target within the property lines of your address list. Ensure you have a list of over 50 addresses; otherwise, drawn geofence targeting makes more sense.

  • Sometimes it's easier to talk with someone about your situation. In that case, feel free to schedule a demo or contact us.
